About the Avatar 3 movie.

Avatar 3 is directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios. It is the third film in Cameron’s Avatar franchise, following Avatar (2009). Cameron is producing the film with Jon Landau, with Josh Friedman originally announced as Cameron’s co-writer; it was later announced that Cameron, Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno took a part in the writing process of all sequels before being attributed separate scripts.

Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald are all reprising their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in a different role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones.

Cameron, who had stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if it were successful, announced the first two sequels in 2010 following the widespread success of the first film, with Avatar 2 aiming for a 2014 release. However, the subsequent addition of three more sequels, and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. The film has been subject to 8 delays to its theatrical release, with the latest occurring on July 23, 2020.

Preliminary shooting for the film started in Manhattan Beach, California on August 15, 2017, followed by principal photography simultaneously with Avatar 3 in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming concluded in late September 2020, after over three years of shooting.

Avatar 3 is planned for a release on December 20, 2024, with Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 following on December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.

Heading off the heels of Avatar 2’s massive success, details about Avatar 3 emerge. February 2, 2023

James Cameron revealed today that he has already shot “Avatar 3” and parts of “Avatar 4,” and “The Way of Water” has performed strong enough that “Avatar 5” is likely to move forward as well. Cameron also teased that “Avatar 3” would introduce a more antagonistic race of Na’vi. Landau said that group is the Ash People, described by Empire as “an aggressive, volcanic race” of Na’vi whose leader is Varang, played by “Game of Thrones” alum and Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Oona Chaplin.

“There are good humans and there are bad humans. It’s the same thing on the Na’vi side. Oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we aren’t aware of.”

James Cameron reveals that eventually, the Avatar storyline will take place on Earth. December 21, 2021

In a recent interview, director James Cameron discussed how Avatar was (and wasn’t) similar to Dune. During the discussion, he popped a surprise revelation – the Avatar storyline will ultimately cross over to Earth.

“Well, it was a challenging decision because I either wanted to do it right, or just not even do it. I just made this – I guess, strange – decision that everything that I needed to say artistically about the things that were important to me, I could say within the framework of the universe that I knew it could be. Just like Dune takes place across worlds, the later Avatar’s take place across…certainly across two worlds, because some of it takes place on Earth as the story evolves, and different biomes within.”

James Cameron reveals how far along filming for Avatar 3 has gone. December 16, 2021

We knew all along that the plan was to film Avatar 2 and 3 at the same time. In a recent interview, director James Cameron revealed Avatar 3 still has some work to be completed.

“Avatar 2 is fully in the can. We have a working cut that we’re filling in the visual effects within. I feel pretty confident with that film. Avatar 3 is still a bit shadowy. It’s way too long. I haven’t really turned my energy into a disciplined cutting process on that yet. But I know I’ve got the performances. That’s the important thing. I’ve done all the capture. I’ve done most of the live-action shooting. I still owe a little bit on some of the adult characters. We were more concerned with the kids aging out.”

Simon Franglen brought aboard to score all the forthcoming Avatar sequels. August 31, 2021

James Horner’s final Oscar nomination, before passing away in 2015, came as the composer of the original Avatar. Today franchise producer Lon Landau announced that Simon Franglen will take over the job. Franglen worked on the team with James Horner that scored the first movie, including writing the music for the songs sung by Na’Vi.

Stephen Lang (Colonel Quaritch) tells EW that his filming for Avatar 2 and 3 is complete.

Lang tells EW that, while the possibility of him needing to return to pick some small details exists, he has otherwise completed the next two Avatar films. The actor says…

“I was in communication just last week with New Zealand, with my director, and everything’s great — he’s working hard. My acting work on both Avatar 2 and 3 is complete. I might have to go back and do a line here and there, but I’m really done.”
