I love you. You love me! Mattel is relaunching the iconic Barney franchise.

Mattel announced its plan to revive the Barney franchise today. The revival will encompass a wide range of products, including books, clothing, toys, and more for kids and possibly even clothing and accessories for adult fans.

The company is also launching a new animated series for preschoolers, set to premiere globally in 2024. The series will feature Barney and his friends and follow their music-filled adventures that focus on love, community, and encouragement. The show is being co-produced by Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana, Mattel Television, and will be executive produced by various people from both companies.

Mattel’s decision to relaunch Barney is part of the company’s strategy to revitalize heritage franchises by tapping into the nostalgia of older generations and introducing the brand to a new audience. Mattel has recently done this successfully with its Monster High and Masters of the Universe franchises.

Josh Silverman, Chief Franchise Officer and Global Head of Consumer Products at Mattel, stated that Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time and that they aim to tap into the nostalgia of people who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation around the world.
