Is a year enough to prepare for the biggest DC movie in generations?

Superman writer and director James Gunn marked the one-year-out milestone this week by sharing a new look at the Man of Steel’s latest glyph. Originating from Superman’s debut in 1938, it’s a symbol that feels both familiar and new, a balance Gunn aims to achieve in his upcoming film. Gunn’s Superman, releasing on July 11, 2025, marks the Man of Steel’s return to the big screen after seven years (excluding a brief cameo in 2022’s Black Adam) and will kick off DC’s new cinematic universe.

A year feels both far away and close, especially since it’s been nearly a year and a half since Gunn and Peter Safran announced plans to launch the DC Universe with a series of movies and TV shows. Since that announcement, new details from the in-production Superman have been scarce. A snow-covered close-up of the super suit here, a relaxed first look at David Corenswet’s Kal-El there. Gunn has occasionally shared behind-the-scenes content on his Instagram, most recently a video featuring a Superman flag near the filming location. More reveals will come, but for now, Superman fans can only speculate about what will be on screen in a year.

We know the actors for Gunn’s take on Superman. Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician) will play Superman, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will be Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) will be Lex Luthor. The film also features Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, María Gabriela De Faría as the Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Some characters are linked to other projects. The Lanterns HBO series will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart, with Gardner being a Green Lantern Corps member. It’s unclear if he’ll appear on the show, but there’s a connection. The Engineer is part of the Authority, and while we haven’t heard much about the Authority film announced with Superman in 2023, she will likely be involved. Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon will play Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026. It’s uncertain if Kara will appear in Superman or if Kal-El will appear in Woman of Tomorrow, but their connection is clear.

The new DC Universe is slowly taking shape. Soon, it will be fully revealed. For now, fans are like the citizens of Metropolis before Superman’s arrival—waiting for DC’s iconic hero to make his debut.

We now know the wait time.

Superman, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, will be in theaters on July 11, 2025.
