What is causing the hold up with the Batman Part II sequel?

It’s been over five and a half years since The Batman hit the big screen. Now we learn that we won’t see a sequel until 2027—at the earliest. That, of course, has fans a bit riled up, and their complaints have reached DC Studios’ James Gunn, who addressed their concerns.

The film was originally set to premiere in theaters in 2025 as The Batman – Part II. Then it was pushed to 2026, then to 2027, and finally to late 2027 (October 1, 2027, to be precise). It is indeed a long wait (thankfully we have The Penguin to tide us over), but the reason for the delay is quite clear. There is no script.

James Gunn took to Threads this week to respond to fans’ dismay. According to Gunn, the only reason for the delay is that the script is not finished. When it will be finished remains unknown, but once complete, it will take another two years to finish pre-production, filming, and post-production. Ouch.
