Star Wars’ Darth Vader Lightsaber Returns to Auction With a $1 Million Start

Star Wars movie

Darth Vader’s most important lightsaber is heading back to the auction block, and this time bidding starts at $1 million. Heritage Auctions has listed the screen-matched hero dueling prop as the centerpiece of its Ultimate Star Wars Hollywood/Entertainment Signature Auction, scheduled for November 12, 2026. The lot is already available for proxy bidding, with the live session beginning at 1 p.m. Central time in Dallas. Heritage’s official listing identifies it as lot 89037 and confirms the seven-figure opening bid.

This is not merely a display hilt associated with Vader. Heritage describes the piece as the practical dueling lightsaber used by David Prowse and stunt performer Bob Anderson during the original trilogy’s major Vader-versus-Luke confrontations. Its screen history includes the Cloud City duel in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and the throne-room battle in Return of the Jedi—two sequences that define the franchise’s central family tragedy and eventual redemption.

The prop’s famous silhouette began with decidedly ordinary hardware. The hilt was built from a 1950s British M.P.P. Microflash camera attachment, retaining elements such as its black shroud, clamp, and center band. Production craftsmen then added T-track grips, calculator magnification bubbles, wiring, aluminum reinforcement, and a belt-mounted D-ring. It was strengthened for repeated combat use, which helps explain the scratches, cracks, missing grip material, and other wear Heritage documents as part of its condition. The listing also notes that the original blade does not accompany the hilt, since the blades were replaceable working components during filming.

That physical history is a major part of the appeal. The lightsaber is matched to an Empire production still through the distinctive curve of its D-ring and to a Jedi close-up through a dent on the lower endcap. Heritage says the prop cannot be definitively confirmed as having appeared in A New Hope, despite similarities in wear, but its documented use in the two later films gives it an unusually direct connection to the saga’s most consequential lightsaber scenes.

The timing makes the sale especially intriguing. The same Vader lightsaber reportedly realized $3.654 million at Propstore in September 2025, briefly setting a record for a screen-used Star Wars prop. That mark was surpassed in July 2026 when Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, sold with the severed-hand effects rig from the Cloud City sequence, reached $3.75 million at Heritage. The Associated Press reported on Luke’s record-setting sale, while Heritage’s current listing confirms the Vader prop’s previous result and upcoming auction details.

A $1 million opening bid therefore says less about the likely final price than it does about the object’s status. With a direct screen match, surviving production wear, and a role in both Vader’s defeat of Luke and his final turn against the Emperor, the hilt is being offered as a piece of film history rather than simply another piece of licensed memorabilia. Heritage applies a 25 percent buyer’s premium, meaning the eventual winning bid will not represent the complete cost of ownership.
