The Matrix 4

About The Matrix Resurrections (Matrix 4) movie.

The Matrix 4 is directed by Lana Wachowski and written by Wachowski and novelists Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchel. Oscar-winning cinematographer John Toll (Braveheart) will act as director of photography. Concept artists for the original films Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce will return.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are returning as Neo and Trinity, and Jada Pinkett-Smith is returning as hovercraft captain Niobe. Laurence Fishburne will not be reprising his role as Morpheus, however, and Hugo Weaving will not return as Agent Smith. Other cast members include Christina Ricci, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Toby Onwumere, Brian J. Smith, Eréndira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Jonathan Groff.

The Matrix 4 is the fourth installment in the Matrix series, which started with The Matrix in 1999 and followed by The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions in 2003. The first film told the story of Neo (Keanu Reeves), a hacker who turns out to be the prophesied hero of mankind. Following a war between humanity and the machines they built, the machines put everyone in tubes and connected them to the matrix, a kind of virtual reality that people believe is reality. Neo must fight the computer program Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) with the help of his mentor, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and his new romantic interest, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). After defeating the machines and gaining some superhuman powers at the end of the first film, Neo must go up against bigger adversaries in the second and third installments.

Matrix 4’s original release date was May 21, 2021, though that got pushed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Matrix 4 opens in theaters and HBOMax on December 22, 2021.

The Matrix Resurrections crosses $100 million at the box office. January 3, 2021

The Matrix Resurrections has crossed $100 million at the box office as of this weekend. The film, which was also available to stream free of charge to HBO Max subscribers, has earned $30.9 million in North America, to go along with $75.1 million internationally. The numbers are a bit disappointing given the movie cost $190 million to produce – not counting advertising expenses. However, the film will soon open in China’s massive market.

First reactions to The Matrix Resurrections are overwhelmingly positive. December 16, 2021

The Matrix Resurrection has, of course, premiered early to some lucky moviegoers (i.e. the press). So far, the reactions are overwhelmingly positive. Here’s a sample of what viewers are saying.

The first act of #TheMatrixResurrections is STELLAR. Smart, funny, weird, self-referential & unexpected. Add to it wildly inventive action sequences, lofty storytelling decisions & a TON of big ideas that will fuel lots of questions. Trust me, multiple viewings will be required

Erik Davis

There was a point in the middle of The Matrix Resurrections where I briefly thought it was the best movie ever made, and, like, I haven’t convinced myself it’s NOT?

I lovvvvvvved it. A lotta people are gonna haaaaaaaate. My favorite kind of movie!!

Emily VanDerWerff

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS is the best romance movie of the year.

Hoai-Tran Bui

The Matrix Resurrections is the most META thing ever! The first 30 mins are HILARIOUS but they WORK. It is full of stunning visuals, intense moments, phenomenal cinematography, and it begs to be seen on the BIGGEST screen possible! Fingers crossed for a Matrix 5!

Tessa Smith

For a moment there, when I left the #MatrixResurrections press screening in downtown San Francisco after the movie finished, I was like: Am I inside the Matrix?

Patricia Puentes

I’d definitely recommend watching the first three #Matrix movies if you can as the new film references them A LOT. Longtime fans w/ dig this film & the ways it twists the mythology. It also lays groundwork for not just more sequels, but also prequels. WB could go Matrix wild!

Erik Davis

MatrixResurrections combined nostalgia, self-awareness of how the franchise framed the entertainment world, & pure fun into a package wrapped with a Keanu Reeves bow. He and Carrie-Anne Moss bring back that incredible chemistry that I loved so much from the first films.

Jenna Busch

MatrixResurrections was a lot of fun. The film course corrects many of the issues I had with 2 & 3. Lana Wachowski is so intentional with everything, right down to the comments about Warner Bros. The concepts are far more grounded and accessible than the previous films as well.

Valerie Complex

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS is perfect, no notes; every bit as polarizing and obtuse as the other sequels and I’m elated it exists. Totally earnest Wachowski sci-fi silliness and jaw-dropping action. I will watch it 600 times. This is a sequel to the sequels.

Brett ____

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS is a total blast. Weird, romantic, extremely. meta, and consistently funny.

Chris Evangelista

Without a doubt, @TheMatrixMovie is my fave movie of 2021. It’s easily the best film since the original, Keanu & Carrie-Anne are absolutely stellar, the action kicks all kinds of ass & the story blew my mind. It exceeded every single expectation I had.

In new featurette, Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) give fans an inside look at their beloved characters. December 15, 2021

A new behind-the-scenes featurette for The Matrix Resurrections teases the return of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and a whole new story for the beloved Matrix universe. “This is not a retelling, this is a new-telling,” says Reeves.

New one-minute clip of the hotly anticipated The Matrix Resurrections dropped during the Game Awards tonight. December 9, 2021

The latest teaser clip from The Matrix Resurrections shows us Neo entering the Matrix via a door leading into a train. In the clip, Neo is told by Bugs that entering the Matrix no longer requires a landline and instead, hackers use moving portals to enter and exit the realm. Then Neo is led into another room where he is met by another version of Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. On the walls are projections of Fishburne’s Morpheus in a key scene from the first film when Neo is told what the Matrix is. The new Morpheus explains that it is all about “set and setting” while the projection of Fishburne’s Morpheus mimics his spoken words.

Matrix Resurrections releases its second official trailer. December 6, 2021

Warner Bros released the second official trailer for Matrix Resurrections today and as expected, it gleefully leaves us with more questions than answers. However, the statement Abdul-Mateen II made to Entertainment Weekly in October 2021, makes more sense now.

“I think what the script provided was a new narrative and some new opportunities that did make room within the Matrix universe for a new Morpheus. I play a character who’s definitely aware of the history of the Matrix [and] the history of Morpheus. This character is on a journey of self-discovery. There’s a lot in our story that’s about growth, defining your own path. Morpheus isn’t exempt from that. This is definitely a different iteration of the character.”

The clips gives us a shot of a battle-worn Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) which suggests decades have passed since these characters last saw one another.

Confirmed: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is portraying a younger version of Morpheus. October 15, 2021

With the absence of Lawrence Fishburne as the legendary Morpheus, it has been speculated that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II would play some sort of version of Morpheus. Today that was confirmed by Mateen.

“Laurence already did what had to be done. I think what the script provided was a new narrative and some new opportunities that did make room within the Matrix universe for a new Morpheus. This is definitely a different iteration of the character.”

Mateen continued to add:

“What the viewers will come to understand is that there are many rules of the Matrix. Age, appearance, the things we identify as real, can be manipulated in that world. The Matrix is where anything is possible.”

Sources say The Matrix Resurrections will hold film’s U.S. premiere in San Francisco. September 22, 2021

Variety reported today that sources tell them The Matrix Resurrections will premiere in San Francisco on December 18. Details, including the location, are still being worked on.

First official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections drops on YouTube. September 9, 2021.

As expected, following the rollout of the What is the Matrix website, Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections. Check it out below.

Warner Brothers re-rolls out “What is The Matrix” website. September 7, 2021

The website, What is the Matrix, has been online since 1998 and acts as the official homepage for The Matrix movies. It was recently modified to show the classic green Matrix code trickling down. The next day, the homepage displayed the traditional Red/Blue pill selection to launch a video.

Click the blue pill and you will hear a voiceover by Neil Patrick Harris’ character saying, “you’ve lost your capacity to discern reality from fiction,” before urging the user to accept that their reality is real, as the current time flashes on the screen and Harris reads it aloud, saying, “anything else is just your mind playing tricks on you.”

Users who click on the red pill will hear Yahya Abdul-Mateen’s voice telling them that while they believe it’s the current time — again, with Abdul-Mateen eerily reading the time aloud — “that couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Both scenarios end with a series of quick-cut shots from “Resurrections”. Each time a user clicks on a pill, the footage changes slightly. Rumors say the website has 180,000 variations of footage, depending on which pill users choose and what time of day it is. And yes, we’re expecting a trailer any day now.

Abdul-Mateen II describes being awestruck at Keanu Reeves and the equipment used to create The Matrix 4. August 12, 2021

Abdul-Mateen II told Hollywood reporter how excited he was to work on the project.

“I remember Keanu and his first line. I looked up, and there was Keanu, and I said, ‘Oh shit, I’m really in The Matrix.’ It was just Keanu in that voice. And the technology that Lana incorporated and the filmmaking, camera rigs that I’ve never seen before. It’s so ambitious. It was really interesting to be making The Matrix 4 at a time when the world was so warped and when reality was so distorted. It could creep in a little bit if you let it.”

Rumor emerges that The Matrix 4 plotline will be centered around a battle against a new simulation foe, 60 years after The Matrix: Revolutions (July 14, 2021).

So far the plotline for The Matrix 4 has been a complete mystery. Everyone involved has remained tight-lipped since the onset of production. Today a rumor emerged (unconfirmed by the studio) that The Matrix 4 will take place 60 years after the events of The Matrix: Revolutions and a new foe (simulation) will be featured. Looks like Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity is the character stuck in the fake reality this time around.

According to Neil Patrick Harris, The Matrix 4 will “shift visually” from the original films. (September 17, 2020)

Neil Patrick Harris, who plays a “small part” in The Matrix 4, was interviewed on The Jess Cagle Show during which he revealed a few new details about the highly anticipated film. According to Patrick, the newest Matrix will shift visually from the original films. Harris didn’t exactly say what that shift would be but we can assume it will utilize technologies introduced since the first film in the trilogy appeared more than 17 years ago.

The original Matrix films produced several new innovations including extensive use of “wire work” and Hong Kong-style martial arts. At the time, the film was on the cutting edge. 17 years later, those same techniques may feel dated.

We’ll have to wait and see what visual changes Harris is referring to. Production for The Matrix 4 began in San Francisco in February and moved to Berlin in March, but was forced to halt due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Matrix 4 is being directed by Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote the script with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. Original franchise cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith are all set to return, with new cast members including Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Toby Onwumere, Brian J. Smith, Eréndira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
