Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves introduction

The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film is written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, based on the RPG of the same name and reboot of the film series of the same name. The film stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez and will be released theatrically on March 3, 2023 by Paramount Pictures.

The road to a Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie has been a rough one. On May 7, 2013, Warner Bros and Courtney Solomon’s Sweetpea Entertainment announced a Dungeons & Dragons reboot with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick writing the script and produced by Roy Lee, Alan Zeman, and Solomon. Two days later, Hasbro issued a lawsuit saying that they were co-producing a Dungeons & Dragons film at Universal Pictures with Chris Morgan writing and directing.

The parties negotiated and Warner began pre-production with Hasbro on August 3, 2015. On May 13, 2016, it was announced that Rob Letterman would direct the film. The release date was set for July 23, 2021.

Later in 2016, actor Joe Manganiello, an avid fan of the role-playing game, said he was negotiating rights to make the film and that he and John Cassel were going to co-write the script.

On February 20, 2018, Paramount was in talks with both Chris McKay and Michael Grillio to direct and write the film, respectively. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick had completed a draft of the script by February 2019. In March 2019, it was revealed that Michael Gillio had completed a rewrite of Johnson-McGoldrick’s work.

On July 30, 2019, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were in talks to direct instead of McKay and Grillio still attached to write the script. By January 2020, the filmmaking duo announced that they had co-written a new draft of the script. On May 6, 2020, it was announced that Goldstein and Daley will write the script and Jeremy Latcham producing for Entertainment One.

In December 2020, Chris Pine was cast to star in the film. Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, and Justice Smith were added in February 2021. In March, Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis would join the next month, with Grant cast as the antagonist. In April, Chloe Coleman joined the ensemble cast. In May, Jason Wong and Daisy Head joined the cast.

Filming began in early April 2021, with a crew of 60-70 people in Iceland. Principal photography commenced in Belfast, Northern Ireland later that month.

Chris Pine tells us a bit more about what the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie will be about. March 17, 2022

When asked about the plot of the new Dungeons & Dragons adaption, Pine gave a great description of the film’s influences, saying:

“Oh man. Well, what I will say is we had a hell of a fun time making it. There was a lot of laughs. The way that I’ve been describing it, it’s like ‘Game of Thrones’ mixed with a little ‘Princess Bride,’ just a smidge of ‘Holy Grail;’ it’s somewhere in that ballpark. It’s a lot of fun. It’s got a lot of thrills. It’s poppy, it’s eighties heartfelt, there’s a bit of ‘Goonies’ in there. My character, he’s the ultimate party planner. I think it’s going to be really good. I mean, who f***ing knows, but I think we got a good shot and John and John are killer guys. They know comedy and they know heart and we had a great cast and we had a good time making it. And that’s all you can ask for.”
