About the Zach Snyder Army of Thieves movie.
Army of Thieves is directed by Matthias Schweighöfer, produced by Zack Snyder and his wife Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, Schweighöfer and Dan Maag, with a screenplay by Shay Hatten, from an original story co-written by Snyder and Hatten. It is a prequel to Army of the Dead.
The film stars Schweighöfer, who reprises his role as Ludwig Dieter, along with a supporting cast that includes Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), Guz Khan, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, (Jamestown) Jonathan Cohen (Budapest), Noemie Nakai and Peter Simonischek.
Filming began in Germany in October 2020, and concluded by December 2020. Army of Thieves is scheduled to be released in late 2021 on Netflix. The plot will center around Schweighöfer’s character Ludwig Dieter, showing how he learned to crack safes with previous heist teams. Schweighöfer confirmed that while the movie isn’t categorically a zombie film, there will be zombies in the film.
The story takes place before the events of Army of the Dead, during the beginning stages of the zombie outbreak, and follows Ludwig Dieter in his early days of safecracking as he is hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a heist with the help of a misfit crew of aspiring thieves.
In September 2020, it was announced that the film, then known as Army of the Dead: The Prequel, was in development at Netflix. Filming took place in Germany, and finished in December 2020. Army of the Dead composer Tom Holkenborg confirmed that he would be working on both the prequel and the tie-in animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.

Reviews for Army of Thieves arrive. Not great, but not bad either. October 26, 2021
We’re beginning to see reviews for Army of Thieves arrive and overall, they don’t appear to be too bad. Not great, but not bad.
“Slick, enjoyably playful entertainment.”
Hollywood Reporter
“Not enough of a zombie movie to satisfy that audience, and not enough of a heist movie for that audience, it’s hard to discern who exactly a movie like Army of Thieves is aimed at.”
IGN Movies
“Schweighöfer is impressive behind the camera, especially when the actual safe-cracking takes place, making a normally mundane action cinematically interesting.”
Total Film
“Thieves” lacks the mature sophistication of a “Topkapi” or “The Thomas Crown Affair.” Still, it’s an amusing two hours in the industrial manner of most films made for Netflix…”
San Francisco Chronicle
“If you squint hard and focus most of your mental energy on folding your laundry, yeah, Army of Thieves is kinda cool. But it’s also kinda bland, kinda formulaic, and kinda sad.”
Globe and Mail
“The impending apocalypse gets back-burned early on, but that storytelling misstep is forgivable enough when there’s plenty of other fun elements in play.”
