Residents in northern Utah were startled on Saturday when around 8:32 AM, a loud boom shook homes. There were no aircraft in the area and seismographs showed no indications of an earthquake. Soon, the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City posted a radar image showing two red flashes on a lightning monitor despite there being no storms in the area.
When home security footage showed a streak across the sky, the National Weather Service surmised the radar flashes were likely a meteor trail and flash. Given the occurrence of the Perseid meteor shower in July and August, it is believed the sound was a Perseid meteor creating a sonic boom as it moved across the sky faster than the speed of sound.
Thus far there are no reports of meteorites found from the explosion.
