Yesterday, many, if not most, major websites including CNN, MSNBC, Yelp, New York Magazine, BuzzFeed, Gawker, Washington Post, Huffington Post, Slate, Kickstarter, and many others were taken down by a Facebook Connect bug that redirected users to an error page upon loading, effectively bringing much of the Internet to its knees. Users who were not logged in to Facebook at the time were not affected. According to Business Insider:
“It appears users who went to a site that used a Facebook button to let users log in redirected to a Facebook error page. The glitch went away if users logged out of Facebook.com.”
A short time later, Facebook issued the following statement:
“For a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people logging in with Facebook from third-party sites to Facebook.com. The issue was quickly resolved, and Login with Facebook is now working as usual.”
Let’s pause a minute and take this in. Facebook is so integrated into the Internet infrastructure that they can essentially nuke a website with one simple glitch. And you thought Google was powerful…
