Super Mario Gets Spooky With Limited Nintendo Switch Online Halloween Icons

Halloween themed Super Mario NSO icons for Nintendo Switch gaming system

Nintendo is giving Super Mario fans a small but timely way to decorate their Switch profiles for Halloween. A new set of eight Nintendo Switch Online user icons is now available through My Nintendo, featuring spooky designs for characters including Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., and Rosalina. The limited-time promotion is available on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. ComicBook.com first reported the release, while additional coverage confirms that the icons are live now.

Each character icon costs 10 Platinum Points, making the complete eight-icon set an 80-point purchase. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to redeem the designs, but the icons remain yours if that subscription later expires. Unlike certain Nintendo Switch Online rewards, this Halloween promotion does not require the pricier Expansion Pack tier, and it is not restricted to Nintendo’s newer console.

There is one important catch: Nintendo is treating this as a single wave rather than an ongoing character rollout. The current eight designs are reportedly the entire lineup, so fans should not expect follow-up icons for obvious Halloween candidates such as Boo, King Boo, Dry Bones, or Shy Guy. The reward window closes on November 1, 2026, giving subscribers only a short period to spend their Platinum Points.

The choice of Mario characters also reflects Nintendo’s somewhat unusual relationship with horror. The company has occasionally ventured into darker territory through games such as Eternal Darkness and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, but its Halloween-friendly catalog is much thinner than those of publishers built around horror. In practice, Luigi’s Mansion remains Nintendo’s most natural seasonal fit, making profile art a safer way to acknowledge October than a new first-party fright game.

For subscribers seeking something more substantial than cosmetic rewards, Nintendo also added three Game Boy Advance titles to the Nintendo Classics library on October 14: Monster Rancher Advance, Metal Slug Advance, and Kururin Paradise. The latter was originally a Japan-only release, while all three are available through the Game Boy Advance app on Switch and Switch 2. Access requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack rather than the standard membership.

That leaves the Halloween icons as the more accessible seasonal perk: they are inexpensive in Platinum Points, available across both Switch generations, and permanent once claimed. For anyone who wants a spooky Mario makeover, the practical advice is simple—redeem the designs before November 1, because this particular Nintendo Switch Online event is not scheduled to return with another wave.
