Introduction to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

A third Guardians of the Galaxy film was planned by Marvel Studios in April 2016, with James Gunn returning to write and direct a year later. Disney fired him in July 2018 after the resurfacing of controversial tweets, but reversed course that October and reinstated Gunn as director. Gunn’s return was revealed in early 2019 along with the five main stars’ involvement, with production beginning after Gunn completes his film The Suicide Squad (2021) and its spin-off series Peacemaker (2022).

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed the film was in development at the July 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Filming is scheduled to begin in late 2021 in London.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022). The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax. Van Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, as Sean Gunn as Kraglin.

GOTG3 is directed by James Gunn with a script penned by himself, Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Andy Lanning (Guardians of the Galaxy). The film is produced by Victoria Alonso (Avengers: Endgame), Louis D’Esposito (Iron Man), and Kevi Feige (Black Panther).

Preproduction began on March 15, 2019 with filming commencing on October 22, 2021. After a lengthy COVID delay, filming resumed on February 12, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Official synopsis:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Everything we learned from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Red Carpet event. April 28, 2023

Ahead of the film’s May 5 release, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast and crew stopped by Los Angeles for the star-studded red carpet premiere. Writer-director James Gunn joined stars Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Vin Diesel (Groot), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Will Poulter (Adam Warlock), and more for an evening filled with insights into the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, fans will meet a few new characters, including Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji’s High Evolutionary. On the subject of joining the MCU, Poulter said, “Honestly, more than anything else, it’s a real honor to be invited into this family. The Guardians family are such a tightknit group. They’ve been together for ten years, so for them to welcome me with open arms and treat me like one of their own, I’m very grateful. I hope people are pleased with Adam and they enjoy his journey.”

“Adam Warlock is a fan-favorite character and we’ve always wanted to include him in one of the movies,” Executive Producer Simon Hatt revealed. “Obviously, we teased him at the end of [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2] and I don’t think anyone’s going to be disappointed with him in the movie.”

“Part of his character’s journey is that he has to learn as he goes along,” Ayesha actor Elizabeth Debicki teased.

Iwuji also issued a warning about his villainous High Evolutionary: “I’m not a very nice guy in this… This guy is not a nice guy—at all!” he teased. “I am, by far, the scariest guy that they’ve ever faced. By far! There’s no competition. Everything else has been sort of pleasant compared to this guy… Honestly, the script was so rich and juicy and the character reminded me of my favorite villains and stuff, so I was really able to tap into that and let the imagination go crazy.”

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige weighed in on both of the new additions. “The High Evolutionary was on James’ list for a while, and Adam Warlock has been there since—I don’t remember now, frankly. He may have been in an original draft of [Guardians of the Galaxy] 1,” he recalled. “He was certainly a part of the discussion—a big part of the discussion—on [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2], and then we seeded him a little bit in 2. And then finally, introducing him in this movie, and that really—I’m excited for the fans to see it, but like Mantis in Vol. 2 and seeing how she’s grown to now, we are meeting Adam Warlock in this movie and I’m excited for people to see what Will has done with this and excited to see where it can go.”

Adam Warlock and the High Evolutionary won’t be the only new characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Miriam Shor will play Recorder Vim, who—like the High Evolutionary—”is not so nice. She’s a villain! She is! Which, if you’re a sci-fi fan like myself, the villain is who you want to play. So yeah, I’m a little worried that after my kids see this movie, they won’t let me come home.”

Likewise, Nathan Fillion will play Master Karja. “I wanted to take a break from playing an armed authority figure and go out into space and play an armed authority figure. I thought that that’d be better,” he joked. “Only instead of a police officer uniform, I wear what looks like a keloid scar, like a big basket of bread. Something!”

“It took a team of guys shoving pieces onto you, and it all straps onto a vest that’s kind of heavy, so it’s all hanging on your shoulders, but then I’m looking around and I’m seeing Karen Gillan, I’m seeing Dave Bautista, I’m seeing Zoe [Saldana], I’m seeing these guys go into makeup for hours just to now start working… I don’t know where they go in their minds for that time, but I just tried to find for myself—I couldn’t complain,” he added.

Additionally, Tara Strong revealed she has a role to play in the film—and she won’t be reprising her beloved Loki role. “Well, I might be in it! It’s not Miss Minutes,” she teased. “I can’t say who it is—or I could, but then I’d have to prune you!”

Kevin Feige releases more details about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 at the San Diego Comic-Con – including the new logo! July 24, 2022.

At today’s San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios announced that Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will release in theaters on May 5, 2023 with a new logo. With director James Gunn taking the lead, cast members Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova (who is playing Cosmo the dog) took part in an engaging discussion. Chukwudi Iwuji arrived on stage in costume, revealing to excited fans that he’ll be portraying High Evolutionary in the film. Director James Gunn noted that this is the end of this arc for the Guardians crew.

“I think it’s really been about telling one story between the three films with a couple of sideways adventures. But I think it really is about the one story. This is the final arc that we began at the very beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy, with Peter Quill, with Rocket, seeing where Nebula goes, and even Kraglin, who started out as saying one or two lines in the first movie and is now a main Guardian of the Galaxy.”

Gunn explained the film will explore Rocket in his early days.

“When I first started doing Guardians of the Galaxy, I was like, I don’t know, it sounds a little goofy. I thought it was going to be Bugs Bunny joins the Avengers. But then I thought if there is a talking raccoon, how is he real? Where does he come from? I realized he was the saddest creature in the universe, and that’s what this story is about, to a great extent.”

“It’s going great. Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I’m really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin Feige went… They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it’s not going to be the movie people… It’s different than what people are going to expect. It’s a hard road, but I’m really happy with it so far.”

Our first look however, doesn’t seem to reveal anything out of the ordinary. The actress sports the character’s lime-green skin tone, lush lashes, and the patterned forehead and cheek markings. Recall that in “Avengers: Infinity War,” Thanos killed Gamora (his daughter), but “Avengers: Endgame” introduced a version of Gamora from an alternate timeline.

“It’s our third film. We’re going to wrap it up. And it’s been a hell of a journey with a few bumps. So I’m looking forward to this, man. My cast and obviously the director, James Gunn, they’re like family to me. This is kind of where my journey started. It’s come full circle and I’m looking forward to wrapping it up. And it’s a bittersweet… I mean, I’ve been doing Guardians since 2013. And, you know, when this comes out, you know, it’ll be in 2023, so that’s a, you know, 10 year journey. You know, all things must end. And, you know, I’m looking forward to kind of wrapping this up with my friends and family.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to begin filming in November 2021 with script that was developed three years ago. (July 26, 2021)

Director James Gunn has confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. # will begin filming November 2021 in Atlanta. The film will be based off the same script that was developed three years ago. Gunn told Collider:

“It’s basically been finished for years. I keep fiddling with different things and adding things, and figuring out permutations and stuff — I’m in the middle of doing another draft now — but it’s really small stuff in comparison to what it has been. It’s basically been finished since three years ago.”

Director James Gunn says Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is “an emotional project to go through” (July 17,2021).

While we wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. # to begin filming, Director James Gunn told us a little more about the project via Entertainment Weekly.

“I’m still shooting Peacemaker, but I’m starting to work on Guardians 3. For Guardians 3, the script has basically been written for a long time. I’ve been playing with it in little ways over the years, but it’s basically stayed the same since three years ago. It’s pretty heavy actually. It’s a heavier story, so it’s an emotional process to go through.”

We take this to mean there’s gonna be some sadness in the flick? Gunn had already revealed that a character will die and remember, Groot and Yondu had already bitten the dust in Vol 1 and 2. And earlier in the year, Dave Bautista opened up about his part in the movie with this unusual comment:

“I don’t know what the script of the third film is, to be honest with you…I can tell you what you already know. There’s definitely going to be a Guardians 3. We’re definitely going to start shooting it this year…I mean, as far as my obligations, I’ve got Guardians 3, and that’s probably going to be the end of Drax.”

Chris Pratt offers update on when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will begin filming.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Chris Pratt said:

“We will be shooting that at the end of this year and the beginning of next year, so like November to maybe April.”

Pratt revealed his feelings regarding the firing and subsequent rehiring of James Gunn:

“Yes, well the script was written years ago because we were going to do it years ago, and due to unforeseen circumstances and then a pandemic – I can’t – I don’t even really remember what happened, but for some reason we didn’t shoot it and now, by the grace of God, we will shoot it, and it will be directed by James Gunn, and that’s really f***ing cool!”
