About the Barbie movie.
A Barbie movie has been planned for literally, decades. In 1986, Cannon Films planned to make a Barbie film, but nothing came to fruition. Sony Pictures and Mattel attempted to develop a comedic live-action Barbie movie with Jenny Bicks as a writer. On March 4, 2015 it was announced that Diablo Cody will be doing rewrites on the script. In December 2015 it was announced that Sony would hire three different writers to write scripts and that they would choose the best one. Casting for the lead was just as problematic.
On August 5, 2015, Sony Pictures set the release date as June 2, 2017. On December 2, 2016, it was reported that Amy Schumer had been cast as Barbie. It also reported that minor changes would be made in terms of the character and the story itself, centering on a Barbie, who is kicked out of Barbie world and enters the real world as a normal woman who is imperfect. On March 23, 2017, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Schumer had dropped out of the project. In August 2017, it was announced that Anne Hathaway would star as the titular character.
With the casting of the lead in disarray, it was time to schedule a release date. Originally scheduled for release on May 12, 2017, it was reported that the live-action film adaptation was pushed back and set for a June 29, 2018. Then the date was pushed back again to August 8, 2018. On April 26, 2018, Diablo Cody announced why she had dropped out as the writer on the project. The film’s concept was discarded in 2017. Sony in January 2018 would later move its release date to May 8, 2020.
Things finally came to a head when Mattel revived its film division. A Barbie film was considered one of two of the division’s first projects. In October 2018, it was announced that Warner Bros. would distribute and that Margot Robbie was in talks to play the titular character. In early January 2019, Mattel closed the deal with Robbie to star and Warner and Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, to co-produce. In July 2019, it was announced that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach would write the script. On July 9, 2021, it was announced that Greta Gerwig was set to direct.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Barbie” had the studio’s best opening week ever in the US, accumulating an impressive string of daily all-time highs. It has grossed $350 million in North America in just ten days, faster than any other release in the history of the studio. The announcement was made by Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Greta Gerwig’s visionary take on the enduring Mattel icon has crossed $350 million in domestic receipts on Sunday, propelled into its second weekend on a wave of cultural excitement and sell-out shows. Since its July 21 debut on 4,200 North American screens, the movie has surpassed the studio’s domestic high watermark for single-day grosses, scoring the biggest Monday, Tuesday, non-opening Wednesday and Thursday for a Friday opener. The film’s domestic seven-day total is an unprecedented $258 million. Barbie’s big screen debut has set multiple domestic benchmarks, from its record-shattering $162 million opening weekend to driving the most pre-shows and biggest single-grossing day to the largest-ever opening for a female-directed film. “Barbie” has also received critical acclaim, with a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Critics rating of 90% with a matching Audience Score and an A CinemaScore.
In making the announcement, Goldstein said,
“It’s incredibly rare for a film to enter its second weekend on a crest of all-time highs, but—as both cultural excitement and theatrical attendance continue to demonstrate—‘Barbie’ is not only a cross-generational touchstone but a box office trailblazer. All of it starts with Mattel’s enduring creation, Greta’s extraordinary vision, and the brilliance of Margot, Ryan and the film’s phenomenal cast and crew. We couldn’t be more thrilled for them on this achievement, or more proud to share their marvelous creation with moviegoers from coast to coast. And with enough off-the-charts Ken-ergy to power us through the summer, there’s no limit to what this remarkable film can do.”

Second Barbie move teaser trailer released – plus 24 new character posters. April 4, 2023
Mattel, in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures, has debuted today the latest teaser of the Barbie movie along with the launch of 24 brand-new character posters, the film’s teaser poster, a Barbie selfie generator and TikTok lens extension, and an official Twitter emoji.
The latest Barbie teaser welcomes fans everywhere to “Barbie Land,” giving viewers a peek into the world of Barbie through the lens of renowned director Greta Gerwig and the on-screen power of a star-studded cast. Check out the official posters below.

Looks like we have legit set photos leaked from the upcoming Barbie movie. The photos appeared on social media and show Barbie and Ken skating at the beach – wearing matching outfits of course.
Ariana Greenblatt joins Margot Robbie in Barbie. March 1, 2022
Ariana Greenblatt is the latest to join the growing ensemble of Warner Bros. Barbie, film centered on the iconic doll line starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. America Ferrara, Kate McKinnon and Simu Liu are also on board with Greta Gerwig directing. Robbie is on board to play Barbie with Gosling set to play Ken. It is unknown who Greenblatt will be playing.
Barbie cast adds another star, Kate McKinnon, to the cast. February 17, 2022
Comedy goddess Kate McKinnon is reuniting with her “Bombshell” co-star and joining the Barbie cast. The part has not been named but could be one of Barbie’s sisters (Skipper or Kelly) or her best friend, Midge.
Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) recruited to cast of Barbie. February 11, 2022
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s big hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in negotiations to be in the Barbie movie alongside Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera. No word on what role Liu would play in the film.
