John Wick Chapter 4 introduction

In May 2019, prior to the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, director Chad Stahelski confirmed on a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” thread that there has been a discussion for another film. Lionsgate officially announced the film during John Wick 3’s opening week, with a scheduled release date of May 21, 2021.

John Wick Chapter 4 will be directed by Chad Stahelski. The screenplay was written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, as the studio had decided to move on from series creator Derek Kolstad. Chad Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee will produce.

Partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film schedule was changed from May 21, 2021 to a release on May 27, 2022. In addition to Keanu Reeves, the cast will include Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama, Shamier Anderson, Bill Skarsgård, Scott Adkins, Hiroyuki Sanada, Marko Zaror, and Clancy Brown.

Official film synopsis tells us:

“John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.”

As of now, the newest film in the franchise has surpassed all previous installments in terms of Rotten Tomatoes critics scores, currently holding a rating of 93%. It’s the first movie in the series to cross the 90% mark, and it’s receiving widespread praise from film critics.

The initial reviews of the film were already positive, with critics describing it as “glorious,” “epic,” and “badass.” This sentiment has continued with professional critics, who have been equally impressed. According to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, the movie is “f-cking awesome,” and he had to “pick his jaw off the ground” due to some of the “insane and inventive set pieces.” Collider’s features editor, Therese Lacson, described the film as “an action-packed, bloody, kill-fest,” and praised it for its thrilling entertainment value.

Actor Clancy Brown (Dexter: New Blood, Highlander, The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers) has opened up a bit about his role in John Wick 4. He said:

“I will say it’s more of the Table revealed. More of the High Table, the kind of intricacies of that authority structure is revealed. With my guy. And I am in a couple of scenes that you could argue are action scenes, I suppose. A lot of my scenes are with Bill Skarsgård, which was a lot of fun.”
