Acclaimed actress Meg Foster joins Masters of the Universe: Revolution cast as Motherboard. May 14, 2023

Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) announced today that Meg Foster, known to genre fans for her role as Evil-Lyn in the 1987 cult classic live action Masters of the Universe film, returns to Eternia with an all-new role in the new series Masters of the Universe: Revolution, set to launch globally on Netflix in 2024. Foster joins the animated voice cast as Motherboard, an ancient sorceress of technology in the fight for the soul of Eternia.

Foster joins the fray as a formidable force against the Masters, focused on plunging Eternia into imminent darkness. Acting as Hordak’s liasion on Eternia, Motherboard is a powerful sentient artificial intelligence that uses her nanovirus powers to manipulate Skeletor and the people of Eternia as she aims to ensnare the planet, and Grayskull, as a prize for Hordak.

“My part in Masters of the Universe more than 35 years ago remains one of my most cherished roles,” said Meg Foster. “I am both thrilled and honored to come back into the fold to embody a brilliant, all-new villainous character that adds color to the vibrant storytelling that Kevin Smith and Mattel have brought to life for fans around the world.”

Set as the follow-up to 2021’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Masters of the Universe: Revolution is an all-new story that takes the classic He-Man vs. Skeletor rivalry to places audiences have never before experienced. It’s technology up against magic as He-Man and the heroic warriors face the forces of Skeletor and a deadly threat to the planet in the next epic chapter in the battle for Eternia. Foster joins Revolution’s all-star cast which includes Chris Wood as He-Man, Melissa Benoist as Teela, Emmy nominee Mark Hamill as Skeletor, and William Shatner in a still-to-be announced role.

“It’s not often that original and beloved actors return to their legacy franchises, so we are excited for the opportunity to welcome Meg Foster back to Eternia,” said Fred Soulie, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Mattel Television. “Her presence in the original live action film left an undeniable impact on fans, so much so that it cemented the film in the pop culture zeitgeist for over 30 years, causing her formidable work as Evil-Lyn to set the stage for Meg to enrapture audiences once again, now as the villainous Motherboard.”

Directors Aaron and Adam Nee say the Masters of the Universe movie will be similar in tone too Thor: Ragnarok. March 14, 2022

In a recent interview during SXSW, directors Aaron and Adam Nee said their upcoming Masters of the Universe will be “wild and crazy” with a tone similar to Thor: Ragnarok.

“It’s a wild, crazy property, and we wanted to keep it wild and crazy. Like, you had just wacky characters, but what we also wanted to keep is that, what it was to experience those toys and those cartoons as kids. Whereas kids, we took it completely seriously, and trying to tap into, what was it that it was making us feel then? That empowerment that made us feel, and that sort of wide-eyed wonder of the incredible things that can happen, and the incredible worlds that you can encounter. And so we want that wildness, but also the sort of reverence and love of it, that we saw it with through the filter of our child eyes.”

Mattel and Netflix to develop live-action Masters of the Universe motion picture. January 28, 2022

Mattel and Netflix announced today they are developing Masters of the Universe, Mattel’s iconic franchise from the 1980s, into a live-action motion picture, expected to begin production in summer 2022. The Nee Brothers (The Lost City, Band of Robbers) will co-direct from a screenplay written by the Nees and David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Wonder Woman 1984). Rising talent Kyle Allen (West Side Story) will star as Prince Adam/He-Man.

Robbie Brenner, executive producer of Mattel Films, said:

“Masters of the Universe is an iconic property that shaped the imaginations of an entire generation of kids with the message of becoming the best version of yourself. With our partners at Netflix, we look forward to showing audiences that anything can happen in Eternia. We are continuing to unlock this global franchise in new ways, and we can’t wait to see Kyle battle it out with Skeletor in this epic live-action saga.”

Brenner and Kevin McKeon (VP of Mattel Films) will lead the project for Mattel Films. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch (Being the Ricardos, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences, The Equalizer, The Upside) and DeVon Franklin will produce. The project was formerly in development at Sony.

Last summer, Mattel and Netflix partnered to bring Eternia back to screens in two series. Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a continuation of the classic storyline from the 1980s. Kevin Smith served as the showrunner for the series, which features an all-star voice cast including Mark Hamill, Lena Headey, Chris Wood and Sarah Michelle Gellar. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a dazzling CG-animated series, which reimagines the thrilling heroic adventures of the Guardians of Grayskull for a new generation of fans.

Mattel’s Masters of the Universe was first introduced to the world in 1982 through a line of action figures. In 1983, the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe™ premiered and became one of the first children’s program to be syndicated on television.
