Reddit manThere may be no right or wrong lesson in this story – or at least we are unable to determine who is to blame for the exposure of true identify of one of the Internet’s most infamous trolls. Violentacrez has formed several controversial subreddits such as r/Creepshots (pictures of unsuspecting women), r/Jailbait (pictures of scantily clad underage girls), r/ChokeABitch, r/NiggerJailBait, r/RapeBait, r/Jewmerica, r/BeatingWomen, r/picsofdeadkids, and r/Incest. In addition to creating, maintaining, and moderating several controversial subreddits, he openly admits to having oral sex with his 19-year-old stepdaughter, having a suitcase full of dildos in his closet, and having a roller type thing with spikes on it that he uses that to roll on his balls”. He loves getting people riled up and he is one creepy guy. Still, many redditers champion him as their poster boy for free speech. One redditer however, found his subreddits sickening, and brought about his downfall.

One of his fellow redditers, who was upset at Violentacrez’s posting of pictures of underage girls, outted him to Adrian Chen, editor at Gawker. Chen took the bait and after a bit of research and confirmation, exposed Violentacrez’s real identify on the Gawker website.

The anonymity that fosters free speech on Reddit had been violated. As a result, many subreddits began blocking all Gawker links and posted this in their moderator forum:

“As moderators, we feel that this type of behavior is completely intolerable. We volunteer our time on Reddit to make it a better place for the users, and should not be harassed and threatened for that. We should all be afraid of the threat of having our personal information investigated and spread around the internet if someone disagrees with you.”

I’m not sure how to feel about this. I lost a bit of respect for Gawker, who I feel published the expose solely for the attention. On the other hand, even though I greatly appreciate Reddit’s open, free speech mentality, at times they allow things to go too far. And as for Brutsch himself – it seems to me like he is a bit twisted. Maybe he needed to be reined in.

Within hours of posting, Chen’s article on Gawker had over 200,000 likes on Facebook.
