The very first Holiday Barbie doll debuted in 1988, styled with big blonde ‘80s hair and wearing layer upon voluminous layer of red tulle. A lot has changed since then, but the Holiday Barbie doll remains a sought-after keepsake gift.
To mark the 35th anniversary in 2023, Mattel Creations is introducing four dolls wearing a golden champagne-colored gown designed by Kelley Lindberg. Lindberg says she likes gold and thought this color was festive. She was excited but also nervous to take on the challenge of designing the gown.
The dress features a satiny material with a tulle skirt overlay that shimmers with golden stars, recalling the original doll’s gown. The gown also includes a pleated sheer cape that ties at the neck with an ivory satin ribbon. Golden statement earrings and a sculpted golden wrist cuff complete the look, adding seasonal glamour.
The face sculpts and hairstyle are different for each doll. The Millie sculpt doll has platinum blond hair styled in glamorous waves. The Daya sculpt doll has a similar style, but with dark brown hair. The Karl sculpt doll features honey-brown hair styled in a glamorous high ponytail, and the Kira sculpt doll wears her straight black hair parted elegantly to the side.
The 2023 Holiday Barbie dolls are a celebratory addition to the collection, paying homage to the original while adding new touches to make them special.
