Introduction to The Suicide Squad movie

Warner Bros. initially offered The Suicide Squad movie to Jaume Collet-Serra of The Shallows and Non-Stop fame, only to see him pass. Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) was subsequently set to direct, but while this film seemed primed to start shooting in Fall 2018, O’Connor’s take was apparently too similar to the Birds of Prey movie, which was poised to start shooting first, and he left the project entirely. Warner Bros. next hired James Gunn to write a script and a few months later it was revealed that Gunn would be directing this film, which he titled The Suicide Squad.

The movie has been described as a cross between a reboot and a sequel, including some returning characters from Ayer’s film plus new additions. Will Smith is out, but Warner Bros. brought back Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn alongside Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, and Joel Kinnaman. Idris Elba is set to play Bloodsport after initially being eyed to replace Smith as Deadshot, David Dastmalchian is playing Polka Dot Man, John Cena plays Peacemaker, and Daniela Melchior is Ratcatcher, among many others.

Filming was completed before the COVID-19 shutdown, and post-production continued from home. The Suicide Squad will be released on HBO Max the same day it’s in theaters.

Only after the movie’s release do we find out who Thor: Ragnarok director and Free Guy co-star Taika Waititi played.

It was common knowledge that Thor: Ragnarok director and Free Guy co-star Taika Waititi had signed on to The Suicide Squad but his part in the movie had been kept secret. Now we know that he played Ratcatcher 1, the father of Daniela Melchior’s scene-stealing Ratcatcher 2. You have to wait until near the end of the movie to meet Taika Waititi’s character. Sitting next to her father, Ratchatcher 2 asks her father why rats are the creatures he prefers to control. And he answers with a philosophic observation that, when read a different way, can also be applied to the rejects who make up The Suicide Squad. Ratcatcher 1 says:

Rats are the lowliest and most despised of all creatures, my love. But they have purpose. So do we all.

The doctor who implants the bomb in Savant’s neck is… the “father” of the Suicide Squad.

The doctor who implants the bomb in Savant’s neck in the movie’s opening scene is played by John Ostrander, an American writer of comic books including Grimjack, Star Wars Legacy, and of course, Suicide Squad. In fact, he is considered the father of the Suicide Squad. Ostrander’s 1987 relaunch of the Suicide Squad introduced many iconic concepts, from Amanda Waller, to her signature detonation devices, to the squad’s villainous roster and more.

The doctor’s name is “Fitzgibbon”, a name that appears in every James Gunn movie (it’s a tribute to his good friend, Larry Fitzgibbon).

Crisp Ratt the rat

One of the rats in the movie is named Crisp Ratt – a play on actor Chris Pratt’s name. Pratt starred in Guardians of the Galaxy, another movie directed by James Gunn.

Pay attention to Amanda Waller’s explanation for practicing her golf skills.

When Amanda Waller is practicing her putting skills, she mentions an upcoming game with Senator Cray. Joseph Cray was featured in 1987’s Suicide Squad #11 as a corrupt politician. His son, Adam, later took Ray Palmer’s place at the Atom.

Rick Flag died… Or did he?

Rick flag was stabbed in the chest by Peacemaker and died. But in the comic book version, flag is killed by an explosion. In 2007’s Suicide Squad #1 however, it was revealed that Flag survived the explosion and is still alive. Maybe the movie version of Flag has a chance too?

Armored truck numbers

The numbers on the armored trucks outside the prison refer to Suicide Squad issues that John Ostrander wrote, specifically Suicide Squad #5 and #12.

Nod to Toxic Avenger easter egg

In the Belle Reve prison scene, a TV can be seen in the background playing an older movie. James Gunn revealed the movie playing on the screen was 1984’s The Toxic Avenger. Toxic Avenger director Lloyd Kaufman gave James Gunn is start in the film industry.

Another nod to Toxic Avenger

In the dance club scene, one of the dancers is Lloyd Kaufman, the director of The Toxic Avenger.

The Suicide Squad Post credit scenes

The weasel lives.

After spending the entire movie thinking The Weasel died in the opening scene, we find him laying in the water in the post credits. He chokes up water, his huge weird eyes open, and he gets to his feet and waddles off towards the woods.

Peacemaker lives.

After seeing Peacemaker shot by Bloodsport’s “smaller bullet”, we find Peacemaker, comatose in a hospital, alive, just barely.

The Detachable Kid appears in an exclusive clip from IGN. (July 23, 2021)

IGN released a clip today from the upcoming The Suicide Squad film that showed Nathan Fillion’s The Detachable Kid character. His character’s superpower is pretty much what you think. Like a Barbie doll, he can detach his limbs at will. The Detachable Kid is not a existing comics character, but fans are pretty certain he’s a modified version of the early ’90s character, Arm Fall Off Boy.

The Suicide Squad looks like it might be the DCEU’s biggest win yet. Early buzz indicates that the film is funny and heartfelt with plenty of action. Looks like this one is going to be a huge hit.

Margot Robbie reveals how the relationship with the Joker will change (June 29, 2021)

Although Jared Leto’s Joker is not set to return, Margot Robbie still explained how the character’s relationship with the Joker will change – and how Harley Quinn’s emotional state will mature.

“I think in the first Suicide Squad film she had a certain confidence and cockiness, knowing that she had the protection of the Joker. She was like, ‘I’ll go on this mission, and he’ll get me out of here in a second’ … that was kind of her prerogative on that film. Then in Birds of Prey it was, ‘Oh shit, it’s a scary, cold world. Maybe I can’t do it.’ In this film, time has passed, it doesn’t directly link to either of those films, but it’s not something that Harley is wrestling with anymore. She’s not waiting for Mr. J to show up and she’s not wondering if she can do it on her own. She knows.”

We have an official synopsis for The Suicide Squad

We now have an official synopsis for the James Gunn written and directed The Suicide Squad.

“Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.”
